Joshua Jackson Reflects on the Loss of His ‘Dawson’s Creek’ Co-Star James Van Der Beek
Actor Joshua Jackson has spoken publicly about the passing of his former Dawson's Creek co-star James Van Der Beek, saying that coming to terms with the loss is still an ongoing process.
During an appearance on the Today program on March 10, Jackson shared emotional reflections about his longtime colleague and friend, who died on February 11 following a battle with Colon Cancer. He was 48.
Jackson explained that the news continues to affect him in different ways, especially now that he is a father himself. Thinking about the impact of the loss on Van Der Beek’s family has given the tragedy a deeper meaning.
According to Jackson, the years they spent working together on Dawson's Creek were a defining chapter in both of their lives. The series, which aired from 1998 to 2003, followed a group of teenagers growing up in a small coastal town and became one of the most recognizable teen dramas of its time.
Jackson said those early years in the industry were formative and memorable for everyone involved in the show’s cast.
He also described Van Der Beek as not only a talented actor but also a devoted husband and father. Jackson noted that his former co-star carried a strong sense of faith and compassion that helped him face life’s most difficult challenges with grace.
Van Der Beek had publicly revealed in 2024 that he had been diagnosed with Colon Cancer the previous year. In the time leading up to his passing, he became an advocate for early cancer screenings and often encouraged people to prioritize their health and medical checkups.
The actor shared six children with his wife, Kimberly Brook, and frequently spoke about how important family was to him.
Other members of the Dawson's Creek cast have also expressed their grief following his death. Actress Michelle Williams previously said she continues to think about Van Der Beek and his loved ones during this difficult time.
Jackson’s interview aired just days after what would have been Van Der Beek’s 49th birthday. His daughter Emilia marked the occasion with a heartfelt message on social media, sharing personal thoughts about grief and remembering her father.
In her tribute, she encouraged others who are mourning loved ones to express their feelings openly, reminding people that it is okay to talk to those they miss and keep their memories alive.
For Jackson and many others who worked with Van Der Beek, the memories of their time together remain meaningful — a reminder of both the actor’s talent and the life he lived beyond the screen.
